🎁 THE PROMISE
Most people read "everlasting life" as a someday thing. Heaven, later, after.
Here is the wonderful part: that is not how Jesus talks about it.
All through John's Gospel, he uses the present tense. "He that believeth hath everlasting life." Hath. Has. Already. Not "will get someday." Owns now.
So what is it, if it is not just later?
Jesus defines it himself, near the end of the same Gospel: "this is life eternal, that they might know thee." Everlasting life is not only a length of life. It is a kind of life. Knowing God. Being known. Starting the moment you look up, running right through this ordinary morning, and simply never hitting a last page.
Which changes what this morning is.
You did not wake up in the waiting room, putting in time until the real thing starts. If this verse is yours, the everlasting part already began. The coffee, the commute, the small faithful things you will do today: all of it happens inside a life that has no expiration date on it.
And here is my favorite detail. The verse says this life is for "whosoever believeth." Present tense again. Not "whosoever achieveth." Not "whosoever perfecteth." Just keeps on trusting, the way you keep leaning on a chair you sat down in.
The biggest thing God offers arrives by the simplest act a person can do.
That is not a small promise. That is the floor you are standing on this morning.
🔍 TODAY'S PHRASE
"For God so loved the world..."
Little secret about the word "so."
We read it as "SO much," like a measurement. But the old Greek word, houtos, means "in this way." This is HOW God loved the world.
Which makes the verse even better. It is not vaguely telling you the love is big. It is showing you the shape of it: he GAVE. The love is not a feeling floating somewhere. It is an action you can point at.
Three mornings in, and you are carrying the exact shape of how God loves.
🕯️ WITNESS
Fanny Crosby lost her sight as a baby. She never saw a sunrise, a face, or a single written word of Scripture.
She also never ran out of joy. She wrote over 8,000 hymns. "Blessed Assurance." "To God Be the Glory." Whole churches still sing her mornings back to her.
Asked late in life about her blindness, she said she was glad of it: the first face she would ever see would be the face of her Savior.
That is what "hath everlasting life" looks like walking around. Not someone waiting for life to start. Someone so sure of the ending that the middle overflowed.
Eight thousand songs out of one held promise. You are carrying that same promise this week.
